On 9 May 2022, the representatives of municipalities and ports of Vordingborg and Elblag signed at the Polish Embassy in Copenhagen the Letter of Intent on cooperation aimed at developing maritime cooperation between Poland and Denmark. According to this agreement, Vordingborg and Elbląg will primarily work together to increase the competitiveness of ports, strengthen their position in the Baltic Sea region, acquire new cargo, exchange technological solutions, and launch regular shipping connections, which, as a result, will have a positive impact on the local and regional market.
This crucial step is part of the INCONE60 transboundary project implemented under the Interreg South Baltic. The INCONE60 (Inland Blue Transport Connector E60) formulates a set of transport solutions to support the active development of peripheral coastal regions of the South Baltic Area by focusing on local ports boosting the competitiveness of the entire Baltic Sea Region and increasing its accessibility and attractiveness. It is addressed primarily to the business sector operating in the area located along the international waterway E60 in the North Sea and the South Baltic regions.
The development of cooperation agreements represents a strategic outcome for the port of Elblag, taking into consideration its growing importance in the Vistula Spit canal, which is at the final stages of its construction. The canal is a major infrastructural project that plans to connect the port of Elblag directly to the Baltic Sea through the Vistula Lagoon.
