Explore South Baltic – Klaipeda

09.08.2022

A new week, a new area of the South Baltic region to discover! This time we move to Lithuania, and more specifically to coastal area of Klaipeda County. It is the only province of Lithuania facing the Baltic Sea coast, and together with the city of Klaipeda has historically represented a cross-cultural area – Lithuanian, Polish, Prussian and German.

The main sightseeing here is the Curonian Spit, a UNESCO World Heritage Site stretching between Lithuania and Kaliningrad province of Russia. This area is famous for its dunes and the main touristic resort of Nida, which is also the largest town located along the spit.

As Interreg South Baltic we support projects aimed at promoting a sustainable way of tourism. In this regard, the Curonian Spit National Park administration and EUCC Baltic Office are project partners of the DUNC – Development of UNESCO Natural and Cultural assets. This project aims at developing cross-border strategies in the South Baltic region to generate sustainable and balanced way of tourism in local UNESCO World Heritage sites and the Biosphere Reserve Areas, taking into account local development and landscape preservation.
