Final Conference of the Liquid Energy project

19.06.2023

On 14-15th of June in Pomeranian Science and Technology Park II, the International and very Final Conference of Liquid Energy project took place. During that event, speakers and guests with different backgrounds were discussed about bio – LNG market, its challenges and opportunities for technology on the micro and nano scale.

During the first day of the Liquid Energy Conference 2023 which took place on the 14th of June, our Project Officer, Máté Szalók, presented the role of Liquid Energy in the Interreg South Baltic Programme 2014-2020 & ISBP 2021-2027 in the context of the potential of bio-LNG and Microscale Market. The Liquid Energy project is implemented as part of the Interreg South Baltic Programme 2014-2020. The aim of the project was to show new products and services by using innovative technologies based on the use of LNG and (bio-) LNG as a fuel.

The two days conference was a great opportunity to hear about the LNG as an alternative energy source or about the Norwegian experiences related to the production of bio-LNG in the world’s largest biogas plant. Moreover, the injection of biomethane into the gas network and the issuing of green certificates in from the Lithuanian and Swedish perspective, as well as the support of the production and the use of biogas were also discussed.

During those days, the audience had a chance to find out more about rural electrification hybridisation opportunities in Nigeria or on the impact of the Liquid Energy project on climate change mitigation. The Conference was also a great occasion to hear about pilot investments implemented as a part of the Liquid Energy project and discuss its outputs.

Nowadays the main activities of the LNG business focus on mega projects and big-scale LNG market and the comparatively diminutive market of micro and nano-scale (bio-) LNG doesn’t get much attention. Even if there are many market players, this segment is generally not yet the focus of the industry participants, however, it should be taken into consideration the great potential of this market it. The companies approaching the micro – (bio-) LNG market e.g., in off-grid application, ought to be prepared to act quickly to benefit from first-mover advantage and prepare a complex strategy underpinned by the appropriate capacities, which include relevant technology and partnerships across the (bio-) LNG chain. Additionally, the policy should define not only dedicated incentives but also adjust regulations that often create barriers for innovative (non-) technological solutions. Thus, to unlock this market, the change of paradigm in thinking about target group (end-users), distribution channels and technical solutions are needed.
